Early Reading Phonics

Phonics

We teach our children to read quickly and effectively using the Read Write Inc phonic programme. We set strong foundations from the start by beginning to teach phonics as soon as the children start with us in Reception and continue in Y1 and Y2 until the children are ready to leave the programme. We assess the children termly and group them homogeneously to ensure they are always reading books matching their learning needs.

Once the children complete Read Write Inc. they continue their reading journey through whole class guided reading sessions in line with the rest of the school. However, their strong foundations in phonics continue to develop through the RWI Spelling programme.

We make sure that the children take home books that closely matched to their phonic knowledge. This enables them to experience success and gain confidence in their reading ability.

Reading for Pleasure

Reading is at the heart of everything we do at St Leonard’s

We firmly believe in the value of reading and we strongly promote it at every opportunity. We use a rigorous and systematic process to teach phonics (Read, Write, Inc ) to allow our children to become independent readers as early as possible. Our timetable has reading activities every day to practice and promote the skills necessary to enable our children to become avid readers. As a cornerstone to our curriculum, we are currently, developing a range of up to date, high quality reading resources. Below you will find links to recommended books for each year group as well as videos of our staff reading their favourite books.
